West African Dance

tiyumbagdpic1

Classes are Monday 6-7 PM and Saturday 11-12 noon.

My name is Fatawu Sayibu and I am from Tamale, the Northern Region of Ghana.  I come from a drumming family, using traditional dances and use the talking drum to tell the stories of my culture, county, and people.

I grew up in a world where there is always music and dancing, it was always a way of life rather than a past time.  I learned to drum before I could walk and began dancing shortly thereafter!  I have been teaching people from all over the world since I was 12 years old; this is my great joy in life!!

My approach to teaching:  feel free!  Don’t think about anything except how the beat of the drums moves you; feel it through every part of your body and the movement will come naturally.  I hope all of my students learn that!  African music brings joy, creates peace, and inspires self expression!

I will do a warm up at the beginning of each class, teaching basic movements that will be used during the dance being taught that day.  All of my classes are open to people of all ages and skill levels, you can move at your own pace and FEEL FREE!

I would also like to mention Tiyumba Dance Company, the group of wonderful dancers who perform with me at schools in the metropolitan area and a widevariety of cultural, community, and social events.  For more information visit Tiyumba.com or call 612-600-4405.

Let the rhythm of the drums move your mind, body, and soul!

Cost: $12/drop-in, $65/6 classes
